A Brief History


The Anshinkai-do Karate curriculum was developed by Hanshi Jim Sereff over 20 years ago. The system is based upon several Okinawan and Japanese martial arts. The primary influences are from Shorin-ryu Karate, Shotokan Karate, Jujitsu, Kokondo, Shimpu kai Kempo, Kung-fu, and Okinawan Goju-ryu.

After retiring, Hanshi Sereff turned the school of Anshinkai-do over to Shihan Jon Moore and Shihan Janine Moore. They own and operate our honbu (headquarters) school, Moore Martial Arts, located in Windsor, CO.

In the summer of 2000, we began studying under Hanshi Bruce Juchnik from Sacramento, California. Hanshi is the 22nd inheritor of the system of Kosho Ryu and founder of Sei Kosho Shorei Kai. Among others, he was taught by Professor James Mitose who was the 21st descendant of the founder of Kosho Ryu.

Erik Plate: head instructor for the Johnstown, Colorado dojo. Sensei Erik has over 21 years of martial arts experience and holds a 4th degree black belt in Anshinkai-do Karate and a 4th degree black belt in Kosho Ryu Kempo.

Jennifer Campbell: assistant instructor, runs the 5-7 year old beginner class. Jennifer holds a black belt (Shodan) in Anshinkai-do Karate. She is an open minded practitioner who has a passion for the arts and for teaching kids.

Several other teachers in Anshinkai-do also periodically assist with classes.


Curriculum

Our curriculum is reality based with its roots in effective street combat self defense. Although we are not a competitive style, we will support students that have a desire to participate in tournaments. Students will learn numerous kata (forms), self defense techniques, weaponry and cultural arts such as Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) and Shiatsu (pressure point massage). Our focus in on the study of natural laws, concepts and principles as they relate to martial application.

Students are expected to practice outside of class to strengthen their skills. Belt testing will include previously covered materials, so students are expected to retain teachings from lower ranks as they progress.
